DROGHEDA Masters Triathlon Club were out in force last weekend participating in the Sportsmans Duathlon Series in Dundalk, organised by Setanta Triathlon Club.
Participants faced a topquality field over a tough, hilly course, with distances of 3.2km for each of the two runs and a 17km cycle sandwiched in between.
Niall Ivory, Barry Hughes and Paddy Carolan represented Drogheda Masters/ Triathlon Club in this, the final race of the series.
The opening run was led out by multiple Irish Triathlon champion Brian Campbell, with the three local lads snapping closely at his heels.
Dundalk’s Bryan McCrystal, the 2009 Irish triathlon champion, had a phenomenal cycle which gave him a two-minute lead over Campbell coming into the final run, with Ivory in a close third.
But having a personal best cycle time had taken its toll on Ivory’s legs for the final run and he lost two places, eventually finishing in a respectable fifth position. Hughes was seventh and Carolan 10th, all having personal best race times on the day.
