MCMANUS AND MCGORMAN TAKE THE HONOURS IN RACE TWO.
By John McDonnell
Spring sunshine was the order of the day as athletes descended on the Rosewood Country Club for race two of the Setanta Duathlon series.
Daniel McManus from Narrows Tri Club in Portaferry took the main honours posting the fastest time of the day in 52:23. He was followed home in second by Gareth Moran in 53:10, with Philip Castles completing the men’s podium in 54:11.
It was Moran who led the men’s race after the opening run leg, completing the first two miles in 10:42. McManus however was quick to reduce the deficit and soon found himself in front midway through the bike leg – he posted the fastest bike split of the day, completing it in 28:28.
McManus sealed the deal with a 12:12 split for the second run leg, coming home with 53 seconds to spare.
There was notable performances too from Adam Coulter, Ruaidhri Nolan and Gareth Kelly all achieving top six finishes.
Eithne McGorman from Carrickmacross topped the podium in the ladies race – a time of 58:42 saw her almost six minutes in front of Celine McPhilips in 1:04:38, with Tracy Brady finishing third in 1:04:49.
McGorman continues to impress with her improvement over the last two years – she’s Barcelona bound for a 70.3 in May, with her big mid-summer target been Ironman Copenhagen in August.
Lots of clubs were well represented too – a large contingent competed from Drogheda and Newry Triathlon Clubs – with age group winners from these clubs.
A special thanks to the Rosewood Country Club for hosting the event, and the Order of Malta for their presence.
